In the range of themes for modern video slot games, the Mayan civilisation seems to be rapidly catching up with the Ancient Egyptians in popularity. Sure, the Mayans may not yet have had games around long enough to rival the likes of Cleopatra for classic status, but with slots like Sun and Moon in play right now, it’s a certainty in the future. The reason I think Sun and Moon in particular will be a long term favourite, is that despite it’s fairly stock 5x3 / 20 pay-line formula, it has some novel gameplay features which add a little something extra to the experience and the potential. There’s inherently nothing wrong with the familiar format of course, 5 reel games are by far still the most popular on the market and 20 active pay-lines is a decent enough amount. Any less excludes the hobby players as the variance gets high, anymore and the 243 ways to win structure from Choy Sun Doa arguably is a better way to go. The game is easy to understand and easy to setup for anyone who has ever played any form of slot in a casino or bar and it’s fully mobile optimised so accessibility is good, the slot ticks a lot of the main boxes, though the graphics and audio are only just good enough if you want to be a little critical. There are, of course, many games now which can lay claim to all the above, Sun and Moon stands out only by using its theme to integrate with the gameplay mechanics. The first way it does this is with the random Mayan temple icon, this appears on reel 2 only and transforms when it lands into a mystery symbol, it adds spice to a losing spin with an extra opportunity to hit. This is good but it is with the wilds and scatters however, where the game gets really clever. Any two scatters from left to right offer 5 spins, with 50 available for a full 5x. This can be done with mixed scatters as instead of one wild and one scatter, both the sun and moon icons on the slot are both a wild and a scatter at the same time. This opens up not only some interesting combinations in the base game but also in the spins rounds for scatter win combinations that you wouldn’t get on other slots. As the scatters have to be in line rather than anywhere on the reels, the variance doesn’t take too much of a hit either, the slot still manages to sit just south of medium in that regard. There isn’t really another slot out there that plays quite the same way, which is a shame as Aristocrat aren’t licensed worldwide for online play. Microgaming do take a good stab at it with Mayan Princess, which shares genre, structure and a very similar level of RTP and variance with Sun & Moon, though sadly without the unique features. I’d recommend taking this game for a demo spin right here on the page, though it has some real cash potential if you are so inclined.

Sun and Moon is another solid and enjoyable slot from the vast list of Aristocrat titles. While not among the new multimedia games, it has a distinctive and enjoyable style of its own. Temples will change into random regular symbols.
